Abstract
427,834. Motor power plant. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and PREISIG, P., 12, Danson Mead, Welling, Kent. Jan. 18, 1934, No. 1795. [Class 110 (iii)] A plant for ship propulsion comprises a highpressure turbine 5, a reciprocating engine 1, and an exhaust turbine 6 which discharges to a condenser 17. The turbines drive the reciprocator shaft through a controlled electric coupling comprising a generator 7 which supplies current for a motor 4 and for other purposes. The turbines are speed-governed, the governor 9 controlling the main throttle valve or valves 8, and a valve 15 in the connection 14 between the reciprocator and the L.P. turbine. The valve 15 is also controlled so that it closes automatically when the pressure in the pipe 14 falls below a predetermined value. When the pressure in the pipe 12 between the H.P. turbine 5 and the reciprocator 1 falls below a predetermined value, a reducing valve 10 opens automatically and admits boiler steam through a de-superheater 11 for use in the reciprocator. If the pressure in the pipe 12 rises unduly, a valve 13 opens automatically to pass steam to the first stage of the L.P. turbine 6. The arrangement enables the turbines to be used for lighting and other services while the reciprocating engine is stopped. The reciprocator is started by opening a valve 20 which may be interlocked with an isolation valve 16. Upon undue pressure arising in the exhaust 14 of the reciprocator, a valve 19 opens connection to the condenser 17. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the exhaust steam from the H.P. turbine 5 is passed to a heat-exchanger 22 in which feed water from the condenser 17 is evaporated. The steam so supplied to the pipe 12 may be superheated. A further modification in which an additional low-pressure boiler may feed the pipe 12 is described.
