Abstract

379,805. Starting. CHANCE BROS&. CO., Ltd. and SPAINK, J. H. ABBINK-, Lighthouse Works, West Smethwick, Staffordshire. July 3, 1931, No. 19193. [Class 7 (v).] For starting Diesel and like engines, an electric starting motor is provided with motor and generator field-windings c, e and a decompresser device on the engine is closed, when a predetermined engine speed has been attained, by an electromagnet g excited by current from the generator winding e, so that the energy given to the flywheel is utilized in driving the engine over compression points. A motor armature b and a generator armature d are mounted on a common shaft, or a single armature may be provided with separate windings. The current through the generator winding e is adjustable by a resistance f, and the circuit contains a magnet coil h which operates a switch h<1> controlling the circuit of a magnet coil k; this actuates switches k<1>, k2 controlling the motor and a switch k<3> whereby a resistance i is inserted in series with the decompresser magnet g, a smaller current than that required to close the decompresser being sufficient to hold it closed. On closing the motor circuit momentarily by a starting switch l, a holding switch o<1> is closed by an electromagnet o, which also closes switches o<2>, o<3>. The closing of the switch o<2> causes the coil k to close switches k<1>, k<2>, k<3> and current flows from the battery a through the motor b, c, the decompresser valve being open. When the engine attains a sufficient speed, current from the generator d, e closes the decompresser valve, enabling the engine to start, and current in the coil h causes the switch h<1> to open and switch off the motor b, c. The motor can also be switched off by a pushbutton switch m or, if the engine fails to start, current through a heating coil n is utilized to open a switch n<1> by means of the distortion of a metal strip. When the engine is running under its own power, current is supplied from the generator d, e to the battery a through a resistance p and the load circuit q.
