Abstract

561,901. Automatic control systems for a dynamo combined with an inductor alternator. MANDL, A., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 4, 1942, No. 9299. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] The invention relates to the regulation of the output of a machine having a field winding F cooperating with an armature winding A to produce direct current at DL and having also a winding AW usually in slots in one or more pole-faces, co-operating with the armature core to produce alternating current, say, of the order of 1000 cycles per second at AL. The machine has a wide speed range. The D.C. output is regulated by control of the excitation and the A.C. output by inductance and capacity in the A.C. circuit. As shown carbon pile resistances RV, RC in series with the field winding are controlled by voltage and current coils respectively in accordance with the D.C. output characteristics. The A.C. circuit contains a series condenser C and a choke CC is shunted across the armature terminals and variably saturated by a winding CS in accordance with the voltage at the terminals AL. Preferably the resistance cp of a carbon' pile regulator is arranged in a bridge with resistances a, b, c so that the saturating winding CS is normally current-less and increases in voltage at AL will operate the regulator to produce a rising current in the saturating winding CS. The condenser C is preferably arranged to resonate with the leakage inductance of the machine windings at some point within the speed range of the machine.
