Abstract

512,350. Dynamo-electric machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CARNEGIE, H. S. May 31, 1938, No. 16242. [Class 35] The exciter of a dynamo-electric machine has a field winding on a main pole carrying the load current or a shunted part of the load current and a magnetic shunt in good magnetic contact with the mair pole for diverting fron the exciter armature the flux produced by the field winding, this shun being adapted to be come saturated at a predetermined value of the current in the field winding whereby the fraction of the total flux produced by this winding passing through the armature is greater when the circuit is above this value than when it is below. The shunt 7 may connect adjacent pole-shoes as shown or may extend between the pole-shoes and the yoke. The Figure shows the invention applied to the compounding of a motor 1 supplied from a Ward-Leonard generator 2. The motor field winding 3 is supplied through a rheostat 10 from a constant voltage source 4 in series with an exciter 5, the field winding 6 of which is connected across an inductive shunt 11 in the armature circuit of the motor. Owing to the presence of the shunts 7, the compounding effect of the exciter is substantially zero until at a predetermined value of current in the winding 6, the shunts become saturated. The exciter may be driven by the motor 1 in which case the compounding effect varies with speed and also reversal of the armature connections is not necessary when the main motor is reversed. Should the motor regenerate, the exciter voltage will reverse so that the exciter 5 will act as a decompounding machine. The point of saturation of the shunts may be varied by adjusting the cross-sectional area or control coils on the shunts or on the poles may be fed through a rheostat from a source of constant voltage or from the generator 2. A further compounding exciter in the circuit of the motor field winding 3 may be controlled by a regulator acting in response to the current in the main motor circuit or to the E.M.F. of the exciter. The shunt may be arranged to deflect a part only of the flux to obtain some compounding over the whole range of operation. The exciter poles may extend beyond the shunts and the extensions provided with main coils for producing a constant flux through the armature. The appli- .cation of the invention to a machine coupled to a coiling or uncoiling reel for strip material is described. Specification 472,472 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
