Abstract
654,756. Automatic speed-control systems. WILLIAMSON, S. Nov. 12, 1948, No. 29455. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] The speed of a motor 10 is maintained substantially constant at a predetermined value by variation of the armature current by a carbon pile rheostat 16 (see Group XXXVI), operated by an electromagnet 18, the force of which is controlled by a generator 23 driven by the motor. In addition to the electromagnet winding 21 connected to the generator, a winding 22 controlled by a rheostat 29 is provided whereby the speed of the motor may be pre-set. In modifications, the windings 21, 22 may be replaced by a single winding, the rheostat 29 being connected in series, or the motor speed may be pre-set by mechanical adjustment of the carbon pile rheostat. The field winding of the generator may also be connected in the armature circuit of the motor. The carbon pile is acted on by a spring-mounted spindle passing through a hollow core, Fig. 2 (not shown), for the windings 21, 22 and carrying at its extremities, armatures the forces on which act in opposition.
