632,999. Automatic speed control systems. TREWEEK, K. H. Jan. 28, 1947, No. 2636. [Class 38 (iv)] In an electrical regulating system a movable member of a polarized relay is maintained in a state of oscillation to repeatedly reverse the input to the field or armature of an electric motor by the inductive effect of a current controlled by the motor. In Fig. 1 the field excitation of a reversible D.C. motor 2 is controlled by contact 1 of a relay 3 which is kept vibrating by a voltage fed back from a D.C. generator 4 driven by the motor. This voltage opposes, in a circuit including coil 5 of relay 3, a D.C. control voltage applied to terminals 7 and 8, the magnitude and polarity of which determines. the speed and direction of motor 2 and hence the magnitude and polarity of the output of generator 4. The following modifications are referred to: (a) control and feedback voltages applied to separate windings of the relay; (b) further control voltages applied to other relay windings; (c) feed-back voltage obtained from the armature of the motor, in which case the generator is dispensed with and the relay controls the motor armature instead of the field; (d) a mechanical control force applied to the relay armature in place of the control voltage.
