Class 38(3) [Also in Group XXXV] In a speed control system for a Ward-Leonard drive the shunt field 11 of the generator 10 is controlled by a series exciter 13 having its fields 15, 16 energized through saturable reactors 28, 29 in accordance with the motor voltage (speed) and a reference voltage derived from a potentiometer 33. A resistance 12 in the field circuit limits the shunt excitation for zero exciter output so that the generator is unstable and can easily be controlled by small outputs from the exciter. Other features: (i) current limiting during alteration of set speed is provided by exciter field 14 in series with the main generator circuit, (ii) reversing initiated by switch 32 in the exciter speed control field circuit; polarized relay 26 reverses reference field when the motor direction actually changes (iii) feedback provided by second control windings 28b, 29b interconnecting the saturable reactors to provide desired motor characteristics (iv) rate of change of speed is limited by a small flywheel motor 36 (or a large capacitor) connected across a resistor 35 in the circuit of the speed control field 15. (v) The Specification states that instead of a saturable reactor in the reference circuit, the control-field-circuit saturable reactor may be supplied through a Boucherot circuit having a controllable A.C. input to give the desired speed setting.
