[Class 38 (iv)] Current; tension.-A modification of the means for compensating the control of tension in operating a D.C. machine 1 coupled to a reel described in Specification 554,623 is characterized by applying the voltage across a D.C. machine 6 in driving relationship with the mill, instead of the reel, to means for yielding a direct current substantially proportional to the rate of change of this voltage and in modifying this current so as to be proportional to the angular acceleration or retardation of the reel. The means referred to may be a flywheel machine 8 or a transformer through which the current from an exciter 6 driven by the mill passes; the excitation of this exciter is varied in accordance with the angular velocity of the reel to be inversely proportional to coil diameter, for example (a) by an opposed field winding 6b supplied by a second exciter 11 driven by the reel or (b) by a rheostat in its field circuit operated by a rider on the reel coil. The Figure shows the compensating current applied to a controlling winding 3b on the constant current regulator 3 and to an exciting winding 5a on a booster 5 in series with the machine 1 and its power source 2 ; the excitation of the flywheel machine is varied proportionally to that of the machine 1 where the mill is driven by a motor under Ward- Leonard speed control the voltage applied to this motor may be applied in the compensating circuit the excitation of the flywheel machine being varied in accordance with reel coil diameter by a rider and rheostat.
