Abstract

590,739. Electric control systems. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Feb. 21, 1945, No. 4346. Convention date,. March 20, 1944. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in. Group XXXV] Tension. To keep a constant pull in a strip passing through a rolling mill, a coiling or uncoiling reel therefor is driven or braked by a driving aggregate supported, at least in part, on the shaft of the reel and the reactive torque is translated into an electrical magnitude used to regulate the driving aggregate. In the Figures the aggregate comprising the driving motor 4 and gearing 3 for reel 2 can rock about the reel shaft under the action of the reactive torque, and against the force of spring 22, to move potentiometer 12. Alternatively the motor 4 could be fixed and the gearing alone rock about the shaft. A piezo-electric crystal or pressure-responsive resistance could replace the potentiometer. In Fig. 1, armature 4 of the driving motor is fed by constant-voltage. D.C. generator 5; field winding 7 is fed by generator 5 in series with generator 8 having a self-excited field winding 9 and mutually opposing field windings 10 and 11. Winding 10 is adjustably supplied by potentiometer 6 connected across generator 5. Winding 11 is controlled by potentiometer 12 and by resistance 13 varied by arm 15 carrying roller 16 bearing on the coil on reel 2. Thus the ratio of the torque of motor 4 to the diameter of the coil is kept constant. In Fig. 2 generator 5 supplies armature 4 and also armature 23 of the mill-driving motor.. Potentiometer 12 controls the field winding of motor 17 of which the speed accordingly varies inversely as the torque on the reel, and which drives generator 18 supplying field winding 11. The field winding 7 is in series with field winding 19 on generator 18 and is supplied from a constant voltage source in series with generator 8 which keeps the ratio of the current in winding 7 to the torque on the reel constant and hence keeps the pull in the strip constant.
