Abstract

551,607. Automatic control systems for webdriving apparatus. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.) May 20, 1942, No. 6869. [Class 38 (iv)] Tension is maintained constant in a length of material 10 passing between two electrically driven elements such as rolls 11, 24. A movable member 49a, responsive to a change in tensions, changes the excitation of one of two tachometer generators 38, 39 driven from the respective rolls and differeiitially connected in series with the control winding of an armature reaction excited machine 40, exciting the source of current 29 for one of the driving means, such as the motors 25, 26. To maintain tension when the material is stopped, resistances 43, 46 in parallel in the exciting circuit of the motors 25, 26 are used as potentiometers whereby an adjustable voltage may be maintained in series with the tachometer machines when stationary, and the potentiometer contact 43a is adjustable with the member 49a to maintain constant tension during speed changes. In a modification the machine 40 may excite a booster in series with motors such as 25, 26, which are then supplied in parallel with the other driving motor. To force the leading driving means such as 25, 26 during acceleration and retardation of the material an additional control winding in a machine such as 40 may be energized from a transformer having primary windings connected respectively in parallel with rheostats, such as 35, 36 or in parallel or series with field windings such as 22a, 20a controlling the speed changes.
