Abstract

[Also in Division H2] Apparatus for forming an open coil of strip metal includes a vertical axis turntable on which an open coil is adapted to be formed, drive means for rotating said turntable, means for feeding strip toward said turntable, drive means for said strip feeding means, control means for said drive means adapted progressively to change the ratio between the speed of feed of the strip and the speed of rotation of the turntable during the formation of an open coil thereon and adjustable means for varying the rate at which the ratio between the speed of feed of the strip and the speed of rotation of the turntable is changed by said control means. Strip S, Fig. 1, from a tight coil C on driven turntable T passes through a tension control unit 3, between vertical guide rolls 11, 12, between adjustable upper and lower endless belt guide units G<SP>1</SP>, G, over an idle roll 4 and between a roller 5, driven at a constant speed by a motor 15, and roller 16, driven by a motor 19, to a turntable T<SP>1</SP>, driven at a diminishing speed by a variable speed motor 21, to form an open coil C<SP>1</SP> thereon. To rotate the turntable T<SP>1</SP> at a dimininishing rate the motor 21 is controlled by a unit 54 which varies the current supplied to the motor 21 in a fashion determined by the output from a tachometer type generator unit 52 driven,. through a gear-box 50, by a vertical shaft 34 of a variable speed unit F of ball and integrator type. The unit F includes a roller 23 driven at a constant speed by the strip feed roller 5 and in turn driving through balls 40, 41 carried by a block 28, a disc 29 on the shaft 34. The block 38 is moved, axially of the roller 23 and radially of the disc 29 to vary the speed imparted to the disc 29, by a screw 37 driven through shafts and speed control unit 45 by the motor 21. To form a coil having alternate portions of engaging laps and spaced apart laps the speed control unit 45 is adjusted as the coil is being built up. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the turntable T<SP>1</SP> is driven at a constant speed by the motor 21 and the rolls 5, 16 are driven at an increasing speed by motors 15, 19 controlled by means 68 in turn controlled by a variable speed unit F. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the strip S is fed at a constant speed by motor 76 and the turntable T<SP>1</SP> is rotated at a progressively diminishing speed by a motor D having a field coil 78 and armature 77. A generator G driving the motor D and having a field coil 80 and armature 79 and driven by independent means has its output applied to armature 77 of motor D whose field 78 is regulated by a unit 82, the field 80 of the generator G being regulated by a unit 83. A tachometer generator unit 84 driven by the motor 76 generates a signal to the units 82, 83. The motor D drives, through a variable speed unit 90 and clutch 93, the contact arm 95 of a potentiometer P and also drives a tachometer generator unit 88 connected through the potentiometer P to the unit 83. A signal corresponding to the voltage output of generator G and a signal corresponding to armature current of motor D are applied to unit 82. In operation the unit 82 acts to keep the back E.M.F. of the motor D constant. The unit 83 progressively reduces the field 80 of the generator G and thus the speed of the motor D as the resistance of the potentiometer decreases.
