Abstract

700,295. Thread tensioning devices. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 26, 1951 [April 5, 1950], No. 8614/50. Class 120(2) [Also in Group XVI] A tensioning mechanism for filamentary or strip material, comprises a pulley, spool or bobbin adapted to be rotated in one sense by the said material moving in engagement therewith, a shaft on which the pulley, Spool or bobbin is fixedly mounted and a helical braking spring wound on, the shaft, the direction of winding being such that the shaft, as it rotates in the one sense, assists the spring to expand diametrically, one end of the spring being secured in position, and the other end comprising a tongue arranged to bear upon the filamentary or strip material, the arrangement being such that the spring tends to expand diametrically when the tension in the material increases. As shown, 1 is a shaft having a pulley 2 fixedly mounted thereon and 3 is a helical spring encircling the said shaft, one of the ends 4 of the spring being secured by a clamp (not shown) to some fixed Dart of the device. The other end 5 of the spring is in the form of a tongue and 'carries a light pulley 6. Thread 7 extends around pulleys 2 and 6 and the arrangement is such that an increase in the tension in thread 7 causes the spring 3 to expand diametrically to reduce the braking effect on the shaft 1 and a decrease in tension allows the spring 3 to contract and increase the braking effect. The end 5 of the helical spring is biased by a further spring 8. For tensioning strip materials the pulleys 2 and 6 may be replaced by rollers and the spring 3 may be duplicated on the other side of the pulley or roller the respective ends 4 and 5 being joined by cross-members if desired.
