Abstract

598,122. Variable-contact resistances. UNITED KINGDOM OPTICAL CO., Ltd., and MOORE, A. A. S. Aug. 30, 1945, No. 22329. [Class 37] A rheostat comprises a length of resistance wire or tape wound on an insulating mandrel with a bight looped over a conducting bar or roller means being provided for rotating the mandrel so that the bight in contact with the bar or roller may be moved continuously from one end of the wire to the other. A mandrel 7 of insulating material is fixed on a spindle 3 which is mounted in bearings in a metal frame 2 and carries a knob 5. The mandrel 7 has a helical groove in which is wound a resistance strip 8, of which one end is connected to a metal flange 9 and the other is fixed to the mandrel 7. A contact roller 10 is journalled in arms 11 mounted on a spindle 12. This is pivoted in brackets 13 fixed to the base-board 1 out of contact with the frame 2, the roller 10 being urged downwards by a spring (not shown). The resistance strip 8 is given a turn over the roller 10, as shown. Insulating pads 16 are attached to the horizontal part of the frame 2 to prevent the roller 10 from making contact if the resistance strip should break. As the spindle 3 is rotated by the knob 5 the bight of resistance strip under the roller 10 moves continuously so that the resistance is varied without steps. The mandrel may be tapered instead of cylindrical to provide a desired relationship between the resistance in circuit and the position of the bight. The roller 10 may be replaced by a stationary bar with a screw-thread, the bight of wire being passed over a guide roller which travels along the bar as a nut when rotated by the movement of the wire. According to the Provisional Specification the mandrel may be fixed and the conducting bar or roller may revolve around it.
