969, 602. Measuring continuous lengths; integrating-apparatus. T. I. (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd. Sept. 28, 1960 [Sept. 30,1959(2)], Nos. 33130/59 and 33132/59. Headings G1J and G1M. Apparatus for determining the length of a quantity of material 11 wound on to or from a drum 10 comprises a rotary member 12 rotating at a rate proportional to that of the drum and driving counting means 14 through transmission means 15-17 of variable velocity ration and means 24-26 not forming part of the transmission means, for varying the velocity ratio so that it is inversely proportional to the effective radius of the drum. In the embodiment shown the transmission means is an integrator having a disc 15, double ball assembly 16 and cylinder 17. The value of the velocity ratio is changed, as the material is wound or unwound, by a second integrator 24-26, the output shaft 23 of which controls the position of the ball assembly 16. The position of the ball assembly 26 is set manually by a screw 32 according to the effective thickness of the material being wound. In a second embodiment, Fig. 1, not shown, the ball assembly 16 is mounted on a pivoted arm, the free end of which carries a roller resting on the material being wound. Thus the angular position of the arm varies in accordance with the effective diameter of the drum 10. The roller may be replaced by a follower having an eye through which the material passes. Means may also be provided for ensuring that the apparatus is operative only when the material is present on the drum.
