Abstract

965,062. Grinding. CORNEAL LENS CORPORATION PTY. Ltd. Feb. 5, 1963 [Feb. 6, 1962], No. 4690/63. Heading B3D. A method of grinding contact lenses comprises mounting the lens to be ground on a rotatable support 2, adjusting the support to bring the lens in contact with a grinding tool 35 and moving the tool over the lens surface by a pantograph device 17, 18, 20, 21 controlled from a template 24 representing an enlarged replica of the periphery and crosssectional curves of the lens. The support for the lens consists of a holder 2 on a shaft 3 which is belt-driven from an electric motor 7 and mounted on a saddle 9 vertically movable on a bracket 12 by a spindle 11, the bracket being horizontally movable on a base 1 by a spindle 14. The pantograph device has two pairs of bars 17, 18 which, at their ends, embrace cross-pieces 20, 21 and is at one end supported on a pillar 16 and at the other end supported on castors 23. The cross-piece 20 carries a bridge 32 having a rotatable disc 33 to which is fixed a tool-holder 34 for a diamond grinding tool 35. The disc also supports a bracket 37 for a polishing buff 36 connected by a flexible drive shaft 38 to a motor 39, the saddle 9 being movable to bring the buff into operation. The cross-piece 21 carries a shaft 40 having a mounting block 47 for a guide roller 48 engaging the template 24 which is secured by a clamp 25 to a table 27 adjustable by spindles 28, 29. The block also has a hook 49 which, when the guide roller reaches the end of the template, engages a pin 52 to rotate the shaft 40 and, by a linkage 43, 44, 45, 46, the disc 33 so that the grinding tool shapes the periphery of the lens.
