Abstract

Apparatus for controlling reciprocatory movement of a gem stone across a polishing surface comprises (1) a tang having means for mounting a gem stone at its forward end, the tang being mounted for pivotal movement towards and away from the polishing surface (2) means for moving the tang lengthwise to reciprocate a gem stone mounted therein across the polishing surface and (3) a guide surface and follower system for controlling the inclination of the tang during its lengthwise reciprocation, the inclination of the guide surface being adjustable in the direction of lengthwise reciprocation of the tang. Apparatus for polishing a diamond on a horizontal rotating wheel surface 1 has a tang 2 with a chuck 3 at its forward end, the tang being mounted at its rear end on a horizontal fulcrum 4 the base of which is mounted on a sliding carriage 5. The tang carries a follower 6 the lower end of which rests on the top surface of a dashpot plunger 7. The dashpot body is mounted on a horizontal fulcrum parallel with the tang fulcrum and is fixed at the required inclination by screws 9, 9. The guide surface may be movable with the tang, the follower being stationary.
