Cutting-edges, shaping and treating. - In a grinding, polishing, or other machine in which the operation on a piece of work is performed in one reciprocation thereof, the work-holder being then moved from the tool to allow replacement &c. of the work, for example, a piece of cutlery, the work-holder 10 is supported by centres 19, 20 carried respectively by brackets 8, 9 on a slide 5, the centre 20 being adjustable by a screw 23, and the centre 19 being mounted on a block 12 slidable in the bracket and pressed downwardly by a spring 18. The block 12 has adjustably mounted thereon a roller 15 which projects through the slide into a groove 14 in a guide 6 and as this slide is reciprocated on the guide 6 to carry the work 24 past a grinding-wheel &c. 7 the roller moves first up an incline 16 on a bar 17 adjustably mounted in the groove to lift the work into contact with the wheel 7 and then moves along the bar. On reversal of the direction of motion of the slide, the work is withdrawn from the wheel when the roller runs down the incline; the work holder pivots about the centre 20. The work may be oscillated transversely on the centres by an arm 25 during polishing. In a modification, the work holder is pivoted to the bracket 9, and carries at its other end pins moving in curved guide slots in the bracket 8.
