Cutting-edges, shaping and treating.-Knife blades to be ground are reciprocated in contact with a grinding-wheel in carriers revolving coaxially with the wheel, the carriers being withdrawn at a point in the circular path by stops for exchanging the blades, which are subjected to grinding under pressure and then to fine grinding under small pressure in the same operation. A slide l carrying a work-rest k is reciprocated on a slide i by an eccentric o which may be operated through an arm carrying a roller engaging in a cam groove round the machine. The slide i moves vertically in a guide g integral with a member e rotated by gears v, f about the shaft b of the grinding-wheel a, the latter being rotated from a belt-pulley c. A spring q holds the slide i resiliently upward, the cutting action being limited by stops r, s preferably at half a revolution of the machine. During the remainder of a revolution there is only slight pressure against the stone, and fine grinding is effected. An arm u engages a roller t to withdraw the blade, the reciprocation being simultaneously stopped, enabling another to be readily put in. A number of blade holders may be mounted on or.e machine. Automatic mechanism for feeding the blanks to the holders may be included. In a modification the work carriers may be non-rotating, the arm u together with the feeding mechanism rotating about the shaft b. Painters' spatulas, planerknives &c., may be ground on the machine.
