Cutting-edges, shaping and treating; gauges.- In a machine for grinding cutters, for example, the thin blade cutters of planing-machines, the cutter-holder consists of a shaft 1 upon which is rotatable and slidable, by means of handles 20, a support 2 having projecting arms 3 and rotatably carrying a shaft 5 to which an arm 7 is secured by means of a screw 6. The cutter blade 11 is clamped against the support 2 by springs 12 carried by the shaft 5, the springs being moved to clamp the blade by a screw 13 acting on the lever 7. The back edge of the cutter rests against an abutment bar 10, which is moved parallel to itself, to position the cutter against a gauge 24, by pins 9 carried by crank discs 8 rotated together, through worm gearing 17, 18 by hand wheels 16 on the spindles 15 of the discs 8. In operation, the holder is turned over on the shaft 1 until the arms 3 rest on a bar 4, and is then reciprocated on the shaft with the cutter edge in contact with a cup-shaped grinding-wheel 21; on completion of the grinding, the support is turned back until the arm 7 rests under the bar 4, and the screw 13 is loosened, permitting the support 2 to fall away from the blade for removal thereof and insertion of another blade. The gauge 24 is slidable in a sleeve 23; the shaft 22 of the grinding-wheel 21 is hollow for the supply of water, which is spread over the wheel by centrifugal force.
