Abstract
507,371. Grinding scissors, knives, &c. NORMAN, H. N. May 12, 1938, No. 14198. [Class 60] A machine for grinding the blades of scissors, knives, &c. comprises a support A having therein a dovetail slot 10 to receive the rib 12 of an adjustable member 13, which is clamped in adjusted position relative to a grinding-wheel 11 by a nut 14. Slidable longitudinally in the walls 16 of the member 13 is a carriage 15 having thereon a. rack 19 moved by a pinion 18 operated by a handle 20, and on the ends of the carriage are bearings 23 in which are pivoted the ends 24 of a square-section bar 25. Slidably adjustable on the bar, and locked by a screw 28, is an arm 27 slotted at 29 to receive a screw 30 fitted in the stem 31 of a vice adapted to hold the work 39 and comprising a fixed jaw 32, and a movable jaw 33 carried by a member 35 pivoted at 34 to the stem 31 ; the jaws are urged apart by a spring 36 and are closed by a nut 38 and screw 37. The jaw 32 has on one end a clip 41 to hold the second blade 42 of a pair of scissors, and the jaw also carries adjustable gauges 45 for positioning the blade 39 correctly ; a spring 43 urges the work towards the wheel 11. In operation, the carriage is reciprocated by the rack gearing, an adjustable stop 44 on the carriage coacting with the member 13 to prevent contact of the blade 42 with the wheel 11. A turnable latch 21 on one end of the carriage allows removal of this lengthwise when required.
