(Cl. 125-11) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for dressing or forming the working surface of an abrasive wheel such as used for grinding operations of all kinds.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of apparatus for dressing or forming the working surface of an abrasive wheel according to a predetermined con-tour or form so that said wheel may be maintained in condition to perform successive and uniform operations.
According to novel features of the invention, the apparatus is readily and easily operable, and is constructed and arranged to produce successive operations with uniformity and accuracy.
In grinding operations where successive work pieces are ground it is frequently necessary to dress or reform the working portion of an abrasive wheel, and it is important that the particular contour or form of the working face of-the wheel be kept uniform in order to produce successive work pieces which are uniform.
According to the invention, a wheel dressing element is moved relative to the working face of the wheel according to a form plate whereby the working face is dressed so as to maintain a contour agreeing with the form plate. Numerous of such form plates may be provided so as to facilitate forming of the working face for various and numerous requirements.
Various changes and modifications may be made in the apparatus within the spirit and scope of the invention which for purposes of disclosure is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of wheel dressing apparatus embodying the novel features of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a diagrammatic view showing the relation of a dressing tool and abrasive wheel;
FIG. 3 is a sectional elevational view on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a sectional elevational view on the line 4--4 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 5 is a partial isometric view of the tool slide of the apparatus of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail the novel features of the invention will be fully described.
An elongated support 2 is provided which will be secured to the machine or grinder, the abrasive wheel of which is to be dressed or formed.
It will be desired that the support 2 be fixed rigidly to the component in which the shaft or arbor of the abrasive wheel is being rotated so that dressing operations are uniform. That is, each time that the wheel is dressed, the wheel will have the same contour or form of working face thereby to provide uniformity in the work produced by the wheel.
Various means may be provided for securing one or both ends of the support 2 to the component relative to which the wheel is rotatable, but forms no part of this invention. For illustrative purposes merely, there are shown pads 4 of the support for securement thereof to a component having the wheel rotatable therein, but any other desired means may be employed.
A carriage generally represented by 6, is slidable in opposite directions on the support 2. Said carriage underlies the support, and has a longitudinal side portion 8 at 2 one side of the support to which are secured blocks 10 which overlie the support. Blocks 12 are secured to the opposite side of the carriage and overlie said support.
An elongated operating screw member 14 is in threaded engagement with a transverse member 16 of the support 2. An inner end '18 of the screw member 14 is rotatable and non-reciprocable in an anti-friction bearing 20of'suitable form, which is held in a recess 22 of the carriage by a plate 24 secured to said carriage.
The carriage is reciprocated on the support in opposite directions by rotation of the screw 14 in opposite directions. It may be desired to rotate said screw by power means such as a motor or the like or it may be manually rotated by means of a crank or wheel.
An elongated toolcarrier or slide 26 is reciprocable in opposite direction in, the carriage 6 beneath the support 2, and is provided {with a groove 27 along its underside.
A dressing tool on the inner end of the slide 26 is indicated by 30. This tool may include an elongated shank 32 having a dressing point which may be a well known diamond point 34. The shank 32 is held in the outer end of the slide by a box secured in place by a bolt or screw 36. A dressing tool of any desired well form may be secured'to the end of the slide. i
- A form plate 40 is carried by the support and in the form shown has edges 42 and 44 of the contour or form to be imparted to the working portion of the abrasive wheel. For purposes of disclosure, the edges 42 and 44 are for the periphery 42 and adjacent face-'44 of the abrasive wheel W shown in FIG. 2. The block 40 may be formed to provide any desired contour or form to the wheel.
Said plate 40 is adjustably mounted on a pivot 46 of the support 2. A bar 48, suitably secured to the support, is provided with adjusting screws 50, which abut the rear edge 52 of the plate 40, for adjusting the plate on its pivot. Clamp screws 54 extend through the plate and, being in threaded engagement with the support, clamp the plate in adjusted positions.
A follower 56 is provided which is disposed above the tool slide by a spacer 58 and means securing outer ends of said follower and slide to the spacer.
The inner or forward end of the follower has a more or less sharp point 57 for traversing the edges of the plate 40. Said point 57 may be hardened, or the point may be a separate part suitably secured to the forward end of the follower.
A spring 60 within the groove 27 of the tool slide is connected at one end to a transverse pin 62 of said slide and at its other end to a screw 64 of the carriage extending into the groove of the slide. Said spring urges the combined slide and follower forwardly, so that the follower end engages the plate 40 while the dressing tool engages and acts on the abrasive wheel.
A guide member 66 is secured to the upper side of the blocks 12, and has a groove 68 on the under side thereof the sides of which engage opposite sides of the follower 56 thereby to guide and steady the follower in its reciprocating movements.
The slide 26, as shown in FIG. 5, is provided with a notch 29 in a side thereof. A lock or latch means 70, pivoted at 72 to the carriage 6 is urged clockwise by a spring 74 connected at opposite ends to pins 76 and 78 of the carriage and lock. Said lock has a projection 80 which is receivable in the notch of the slide in a retracted position thereof.
In an operative position of the dressing tool with the support suitably secured to a component relative to which the abrasive wheel is rotatable, the tool slide is in its retracted position, or to the left in FIG. 1, wherein the projection 80 of the lock engages in the notch 29 of the 3 tool slide. The slide is releasahly held thereby in the retracted position until the lock disengages the slide.
When it is desired to dress the wheel the carriage is moved to locate the point of the follower adjacent the rear end of the surface 42 of the form plate, then the lock is swung counterclockwise to remove the projection thereof from the notch of the slide, so that the spring urges the slide and follower to the left with the point of the follower against the end portion of the surface 42 of the form plate.
The screw 14 is rotated manually, or by such power means as may be desired, so as to move the carriage and cause the point of the follower to traverse the portions 42 and 44 of theforr'n plate, while simultaneously therewith the forming or dressing tool traverses the working portions of the abrasive wheel. On completion of the dressing operation the tool slide is moved to and releasably held in retracted position whereby rfollower point is away from the form plate.
It is desired that the point of the follower traverse the form plate in the direction of the arrows shown. Form plates for diiierent wheel formations however may require different motions.
Itwill be observed that the tool slide is movable transversely of the support and the angularity of such movement may be at various angles relative to the direction of movement of the carriage.
The support may be connected to that part of a machine relative to which the abrasive wheel is rotatable by various means, in order to obtain the desired accuracy in wheel dressing operations.
Various modifications and changes may he made in the apparatus without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is desired to be limited, if at all, by the appended claim, rather than by the foregoing description of the presently preferred form of the invention.
I claim:
Apparatus for forming and dressing a portion of an abrasive wheel comprising, an elongated support, a carriage slidable longitudinally in opposite directions on said support, a tool slide disposed below said support reciprocable back and forth on said carriage in a direction opposed to the direction of movement of said carriage on said support having a forward end for carrying a wheel dressing tool and a rearward end for carrying a follower disposed above said support, a form plate pivotally mounted on said support, means engaging said form plate for adjustment thereof relative to said support, said form plate having a forming portion corresponding to the form of the portion of the abrasive wheel to be dressed, said follower movable by said tool slide for traversing the forming portion of said form plate, spring means disposed within said tool slide for urging said tool slide and follower in wheel dressing direction, and latch means pivotally mounted upon said carriage and engageable with said tool slide for releasably holding said tool slide in inoperative retracted position.
