7 claims. (c1. 51-2'54) n .This invention relates to tools for dressing or grinding the Walls of grooves, more particularly tools. for dressing or grinding the bottom of the helical groove of a feed wheel or cylinder such as the feed wheel of a centerless grinding machine. The invention has for its principal objects means for easily and more accurately dressing or grinding the bottoms of such helical grooves and for easily accommodating the nice adjustmentsrequired in such a device.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved wheel dressing and grinding wheel driving means and grinder guiding means that .will enable the cutter or grinder to operate at a higher and constant speed and to dress the helical groove of the wheel in a more accurate manner so that the resulting Work piece and guide vwheel will operate at a very high degree of accuracy.
The invention consists principally in a grinding.wheel adapted to be set to conform to the lead. of a helical groove and mounted on a slidable hangerthat is provided with means engaging a side wallof a groove, whereby the grinding wheel may be fed along the groove by rotating the feed wheel or other member whose groove is being dressed. The invention further consists in the groove dressing tool and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: y Fig. l is an elevational View of the device incorporating the invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device looking in the direction of the line 2-2 of Fig. l, Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken along the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 shows an elevational view of a portion of a guide wheel. Y
The present guide or control wheel is of the same general type as that illustrated in United States Patent No. 1,722,023 which shows the guide Wheel having a helical groove in which the work supporting surface of the groove must be dressed or ground-from time to time. In this patent the groove grinder guiding is done by the side walls of the groove or channel which become worn in use and regrinding, thereby reducing the accuracy of the machine. The specific guide wheel I comprising the'present invention is shown in Fig. 5 on which spaced collars are formed, on one side of which is aV guide channel Ia adjacent which surface Ib is formed which is the surface to be operated upon and adjacent which the Y other collar is located. A tapered roller B enffgages the surface Ib and the roller is centerless --ground-bywheel A in the. customary manner.
Roller B is supported against one of the guide wheel collars in addition to engaging surface Ib. This structural organization results-in a more accurately machined surface on the roller B because the guide channel is distinct from the roller supporting portion of the guideH wheel so that subsequent regrindings of the surface Ib do not disturb the spacing between the said collar and surface Ib.
The guide wheel I, which is the object worked upon for the grinder to be described, is rotatably supported on a spindle 2 suitably rotatably ymounted in a base 3 of a grinder on which it is customarily supported. Removably secured to the upper part of the base 3 is a xture 4 provided with a double way guide 5 on which aj slide 6 is slidably mounted. Adjustably supported on the slide 6 is a prime mover 'I preferably in the form of an electric motor operated by an electric current having a frequency in the neighborhood of 1'80 cycles and which is belt-connected to a spindle 8 rotatably mounted in a quill 9 that is slidably received in a lclamping sleeve I0. A grinding Wheel II is secured to the spindle 8 adjacent the opposite end of the quill from the vbelt drive and is intended to engage the surface Ib of the work piece.
The sleeve I0 is supported on a slide I2 that is supported on a dovetailed column I3. Slide I4 is supported on column I3 opposite slide I2 and is attached to slide I2 through member I4'. Slides I2 and I4 are adjusted vertically as a unit b-y means of screw I5 and crank I6 with respect to slide 6. This vertical adjustment is necessary to apply or withdraw the grinding wheel I l to or from the guide wheel I as required. The motor, grinder and belt are supported on the member I4 by suitable supports and move as a unit with respect to slide 6. The slides I2 and I4 are moved as a unit by screw I5 threaded into slide I3. The screw is rotatably received in a suitably shaped formation in member I4 and is rotated by crank I6. The carrier Il for the grinding Wheel dressing tool I8 is also carried by slide I2. The tool I8 is secured by screw I9 into member 2U that is slidably received in carrier Il. The lead screw 22 is threaded into the nut 23 so that when screw 22 is rotated, the member 20 will be moved parallel to the longitudinal axis of the spindle 8, thereby moving tool I8 across the surface of the grinding Wheel II.
The carrier I'I is pivotally supported on the slide I2 by means of a pin 25 secured in slide 32 on which slide 2B is supported. The carrier I1 and member 20 are supported on the-slide 26. Pivotal adjustment is made by meansof two screws 21 and 28 rotatably supported in ears secured to the slide 32. The screws contact an extension 29 of slide 26 and by means of pointer 30 secured thereto and indicia 3I, the degree of tilt to slide 26 is determined, which determines the angle the cutting surlace of grinder I I makes with the horizontal to thereby properly grind surface Ib in the guide wheel I. Vertical adjustment of slide 32 relative to slide I2 to feed tool I8 toward the grinder II is made by screw 33 threaded into the slide 32 and rotatably received in a bracket 35 secured to slide I2. Slide 26 may be locked in any angularly adjusted position by member 26 which has a locking screw therein that is threaded into the slide 32 so as to clamp the two slides together. A graduated operating member 34 makes possible a very fine adjustment of the tool I8 toward and away from the A-grinding wheel II.
Supported on the slide I2 is another slide 36 on `whose lower end a follower 31 is mounted which is adapted to engage channel Ia in the guide wheel I. This slide is vertically adjustable by means of a screw 38 and lock nut 39 threaded into a bracket integrally associated with the slide. The screw 38 engages an abutment on slide 6. The slide is locked in adjusted position by clamp vmembers 40, each of which is provided with screws that engage the slide 36.
From the foregoing it is evident that a device has been provided that makes possible the grinding of any desired angle to surface Ib that will provide for a constant dressing of the wheel to said angle and that will drive the grinding wheel at a high and substantially constant speed.
