12 Claims. (Cl. 12S-11) This invention relates to grinding wheel dressers.
One object of this invention is to provide a radius to tangent grinding wheel dresser wherein the dressing tool holder, such as a diamond holder, is reciprocated to and fro in a rotatable mount structure by means of a cable or other flexible connector passing around a cable drum which in turn is mounted on a shaft carrying a handle or hand wheel, thereby eliminating the rack and pinion mechanism previously used for this purpose, with their backlash and other mechanical faults.
Another object is to provide a radius to tangent grinding wheel dresser of the foregoing character wherein the mount structure is also rotatable independently of the cable drum.
Another object is to provide a radius to tangent grinding wheel dresser of the foregoing character wherein the handle or hand wheel for rotating the cable drum shaft is selectively engageable with or disengageable from the hand wheel or other means for rotating the mount structure so as to enable these to be rotated as a unit or rotated individually independently of one another.
Another object is to provide a radius to tangent grinding wheel dresser of the foregoing character wherein means is additionally provided for temporarily disengaging the two handles or hand wheels for independently rotating the cable drum and mount structure respectively, so as to enable either unitary or independent operation thereof.

Referring to the drawings in detail, Figures l to 4 and 6 show a radius to tangent grinding wheel dresser, generally designated 10, as consisting of a base 12 having a bottom surface 13 adapted to be clamped to the bed or i rates Patent carriage 14 (Figure 6) of a grinding machine, generally ICC designated 16, having a rotary shaft 18 upon which is mounted a grinding wheel 20, the periphery 22 of which is to be dressed by the grinding wheel dresser 10 of the present invention. The base 12 is provided with an upright portion 24 in the form of a plate substantially at right angles to the base 12 and having a horizontal bearing boss 26 of approximately cylindrical shape equipped with a bearing bore 28 containing a bearing sleeve 30. The upright 14 is also provided with an annular T-slot 32 centered on the axis of the bearing bore 28 and sleeve 30 and adapted to receive the head and shank of each of a pair of threaded stops 34 having clamping nuts 36 threaded thereon and cylindrical stop portions 38 projecting axially therefrom in directions parallel to one another and to the axis of the bore 28 and sleeve 30.
Rotatably mounted in the bearing sleeve 30 is the hollow stern 40 (Figure 2) of a mount structure, generally designated 42, of approximately box-shaped form with parallel upper and lower walls 44 and 46, parallel end walls 48 and 50 (Figure 3), a rear wall 52 engageable with the front surface of the upright 24 and annularly grooved as at 49 to receive a gasket or packing 51. The
end walls 48 and 50 are secured to the ends of the upper and lower walls 44 and 46 by screws 43 (Figure l). The mount structure 42 has an open front which is closed by a cover plate 54 bolted thereto as at 56 and having an elongated slot 58 therethrough. The top and bottom walls 44 and 46 are provided with holes 60 at locations equidistant from the vertical center line thereof (Figure 4) for receiving the shanks of ilat-headed buttons 62 provided for the application of a sine bar (not shown). The top wall 44 is also provided with a central hole 64 (Figure 2) adapted to receive the shank of a stop bracket 66 carrying atransverse pivot pin 68 upon which a swinging stop 70 is pivotally mounted for motion selectively into and out of the path of travel of the stop portions 38 of the stops 34.
The stem 40 of the mount structure 42 is of hollow cylindrical shape and has a reduced diameter coaxial threaded portion 72 projecting horizontally therefrom (Figure 2) and carrying an internally-threaded outer hand wheel 74 threaded thereon and secured thereto by the set screw 76. The hand wheel 74 is provided with a center stop socket 78 for a purpose described subsequently below. The reduced diameter threaded portion 72 and the hollow stern 40 are provided respectively with a bore 80 and counterbore 82 coaxial therewith and in which are rotatably and reciprocably mounted a shaft 84 and cylindrical head 86 respectively. Mounted on the outer end of the shaft 84 and secured thereto by a set screw 88 is an inner hand wheel 90 having on the inner side thereof a boss 92 from which a center stop 94 projects parallel to the axis of the shaft 84 and in alignment with the center stop socket 78 (Figure 2). The shaft 84, head 86 and hand wheel 90 are urged to the right in order to urge the center stop 94 into the socket 78 by a compression coil spring 96 encircling the shaft 84 within the counterbore 82 and interposed between the head 86 and the end of the counterbore 82.
Integral with and coaxial with the head 86 and shaft 84 is a cable drum 98 having a helical groove 100 therein (Figures 2, 4 and 5) in which an elongated exible connector, such as a stranded wire cable 102, is mounted and secured at its opposite ends by means of set screws 104, threaded into the cable drum 98 at diametrically opposite locations (Figure 4). The cable 102 passes over grooved pulleys 106 and 108 rotatably mounted in brackets 110 and 112 respectively. The bracket 110 is xedly bolted or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the end wall 48, whereas the bracket 112 has a threaded stem 114 which passes through a bore 116 in the opposite end wall 50 and carries an adjusting nut 118 for adjusting -the tension or taking up the slack in the cable 102.
The cable 102 intermediate its opposite ends is anchored by a set screw 120 (Figures 2 and 4) threaded into a hole 122 in the lower wall 124 of a carriage 126 having an upper wall 128 parallel to the lower lwall 124. The upperand lower walls 128 and 124 vare machined on theirwouter surface to accurately engage .the machined ,inner surfaces of the upper and lower walls. and 46 of the mount structure 42 and are `intero(11111@{11641 byA `a lfront wall 130 (Figure 2.). The front wall 130 is bored as at 132 coaxially with the bores 8,0 and 82 in the centralized position of the grinding wheel dresser 10. Mounted' in the bore 132 and projecting through the slot 58 is the stem 134 of an arm 136 to whichy the car., nage 1261s secured by a set screw 138 threaded through the ,radial hole `14.1) in the front wall 130. The inner end of the adjusting screw 1.44 within` the recess 146- engages the correspondingly-curved forward end I148 (Figure 5) of a hollow plunger 150 having an inner end flange `15.2 reciprncable within a bore 154 coaxial with the shaft 84, head 86 and cable drum98 and retained 1I1 position by an externally-threaded vcollar 156 threaded into the threaded entrance 158 of the bore 154. Theplunger 150 is provided with a socket 160,'the end of which is engaged by one endof a helical compression spring 162.. the opposite end of which engagesr the end wall 164 ofthe bore 154. As a consequencerrthe partially sepherical end 148 of the spring-pressed plunger 150 serves as a detent yieldably engaging the partially spherical recess 146 when the grinding wheel -dresser 10? is inv itscentered position. The clockwise rotation of the adjusting Screw 144, however,v is suliicient to push the YendA 1 48 of the plunger 150 out of the recess 146 and, through the intermediate action of the springy 162, transmit this axial motion to the cable head 98, head 86, shaft 84 and center stop 94, shifting these simultaneously to the left so as to withdraw the center stop 94 from its socket 78 and maintain it out of engageability therewith.
Ihe arm 136 is provided with a dovetail rib 166 (Figures l, 2 and 3) which precisely and slidably fits the dovetail groove 168 in a base block 169 of a dressing tool carrier slide 170. The latter has an elongated tapered boss 172 Projecting forwardly from the base bloek'169, and the boss 172 in turn has a bore 174 therein disposed parallel to the axis of the stem 134 and slidably receiving a` supporting rod 176 for the head 178 otra dressing tool holder 130. The ma 176 is lociedin its adjusted pesition by a set screw 179 in a radial threaded hole 181 in th@ boss 172. The holder 180 has a transverse bore 182` disposed radial to the axis of the Vstern 134 and receiving the shank 1.84 `of a dressing tool 186 havinga hard 18.8 consisting ofY a diamond or other hard crystal or point. The shank`184 is adjustablylocked in position in the radial bore 182 by a set screw 190 threaded into a threaded hole 192 coaxial with the bore 174. The base block 170 is split as at 194 and its opposite side portions 196 and 198 are adjustably interconnected hy a clamping screw 200 (Figure 1), the smooth shank of which passes through a smooth bore 202 in the side pon tion 198 and the threaded shank portion into a threaded bore 204 in the opposite half 196.
Prior to the operation of the grinding wheel dresser 10, let it be assumed that the cable 102 has been tightened to take up the slack therein and eliminate lostl motion, by tightening the nut 118 on the threaded stem 114- of the movable pulley 1.12 (Figure 4). Let it also befassurned that the various parts are in the centralized positionsshown in the drawings, with the end .148 of the plunger 150 seated in the recess 1.416 inthe stem 1 34. Let it als@ be assumed 'that lthe stops. 34 have been adjusted ink the ,annular ltey `.Slot .32 and clamped by means of the nuts 36 to position their stop portions 38 in which locations as to limit the rocking motion of the box-shaped mount structure 42. In Figures 2, 3 and 4, for example, the stop portions 38 are shown in positions permitting the mount structure 42 to rock through a path of approximately 180 and consequently permitting the grinding wheel ,dressing diamond `or other hard point 188 to swing through a semi-circle centered .on the axis of rotation ot the stern 134 within the bore 132 in the front wall 130 of the carriage 126.
Let it also be assumed that the dressing tool carrier slide 170 has been adjusted upward or downward along the dovetail rib 156 to providethe desired radius of cut for the dressing diamond 188, and that the bottom surface 13 of the base 12 has been bolted or otherwise securely clamped to the bed or carriage 14 of the grinding machine 16 so as to locate the dressing diamond 188 in coincidencewith a vertical radius of the grinding wheel .20, the periphery 22 of which is to be dressed. For a tine adjustment in this respect, the rod 176 may be moved backend forth in the bore 174 of the elongated boss 172 and locked in position by the set screw 177.
To dress the wheel periphery 22 with a straight or cylindrical surface,-the hand wheel 74 is rotated to swing thc mount structure 42 into a horizontal position so that the carriage 126 therein will travel to and fro in a horizontal path. This may be set and checked for horizontalposition by asine bar. placed on the upper buttons 62 or by gauge blocks or a feeler gauge placed beneath the lower buttons 62. The screw 144 is rotated in a clockwise direction to push the head 148 of the plunger 1.50.out of the recessf146and thus disable its detent action when the center position is reached or passed, as Well aste push! the cable drum 98, shaft 84 and hand wheel'99. rearwardly to withdraw the stop lug 94 from engageahility with the stop recess 78 in the handwheel 74. The operator then rotates the inner hand wheel to correspondingly` rotate the cable drum 98 and, through the connection ofthe cable 102 with the carriage 126 at theset screw 120, move the carriage 126 horizontally to andrfro, carrying 'with it the arm 136 and the Adressing toolcarrier slide A withthe dressing tool 186. As
the diamond or other cutting point travels horizontally to and fro in this manner, it produces a straight cnt onytheperiphery 22 of the grinding wheel 20 parallel O the axis of'rotation of the shaft 18 thereof.
If, on the other.hand, it is desired to cut a straight edge on the periphery 22 of the grinding wheel 20, `but at an angle. to. the axis lof rotation-thereof, such as, for example, in producing a V edge on the grinding wheel 20, the mount structure 42 is rocked around its axis of rotation by means of the hand wheel 74 to the desired angle for each part of the V edge, and this angle set and checked, either by a sine bai-.placed on the buttons 62, with the assistance of precision gauge blocks. Alternatively, the forward face of the upright 82 outwardly of the annular T-slot 32may be provided with circular graduations (not shown) in degrees or other suitable indicia to facilitate the setting of the mounting structure 42 to the proper angle to the horizontal, a suitable index pointer being of course proyided on. or connected to the mounting structure 42 to register with these graduations. Such graduations and pointers, together with their Vernier scales, are conventional and form no part ofl the present invention, and are omitted-from the drawing to simplify the showing. After one-half of the V edge of the grinding wheel periphery 22 has been dressed in this manner, following the procedure set forth in the previous description of dressing the periphery 22 to a straight cylindrical surface, the mounting structure 42 is readjusted to the new angle required for` the opposite side of' the V edge and the dressing procedure repeated for that side. Grinding wheels with suchY V. edges are used, for example, in thread grinding and also in bevel edge grinding spectacle lenses.
To dress the periphery 22 of the grinding wheel 20 to a curved edge having the curvature of the arc of a circle, the dressing tool carrier slide 170 is moved radially along the dovetail rib 166 of the arm 136 until the tip of the dressing diamond 188 is located at the distance from the axis of rotation of the stem 134 equal to the radius desired to be cut on the periphery 22 of the grinding wheel 20 and clamped in position by means of the clamping screw 200. The screw 144 in the stem 134 is unscrewed suiciently to permit the head 148 of the plunger 150 to re-enter the spherical recess 146 (Figures 2 and 5) so as to reinstate their detent action. Thereupon the operator turns the inner hand wheel 90 to rotate the cable drum 98 and traverse the carriage 126 until the latter reaches its central position, as evidenced by the feel of the curved end 148 of the plunger 150 entering the correspondingly curved recess 146 in the stem 134. The center stop 94 then enters the center stop recess 78 (Figure l) so that the grinding wheel dresser is now placed in its centralized position. To regulate the length of the arc of swing, the stops 34 are now adjusted to the appropriate peripheral distances on opposite sides of the vertical plane through the axis of rotation of the stem 134. This limits the angle through which the arm 136 is to be swung, according to the angle subtended by the arcuate crosssection to be imparted to the periphery 22 of the grinding wheel 20. The swinging stop 70 is now moved into its vertical position (Figure 2) where it will engage the stop portions 38 thus set, and the nuts 36 are tightened to lock the stops 34 in their adjusted positions.
The operator now turns the outer hand wheel 74 to and fro so as to rock the mount structure 42 and with it the arm 136 and dressing tool carrier slide 170, thereby swinging the dressing diamond 188 or other crystal or hardened tip over the edge 22 of the grinding Wheel 120 in order to dress it to the desired radius of curvature. Several cuts are of course taken, if necessary, in order to accomplish this purpose, particularly when the contour of the periphery 22 is being radially changed, such as from a straight edge to a curved edge or from an edge of one curvature to an edge of a quite diierent curvature. While this swinging of the mount structure 42 is taking place, the shaft 84, hand wheel 90 and cable drum 98 rotate as a unit therewith because of the engagement of the center stop 94 with the center stop socket 78, so that no horizontal motion of the carriage 126 can or does take place. The rocking of the mount structure 42, and the consequent swinging of the dressing tool 186 is limited at the opposite ends of their swing by the engagement of the swinging stop 70 with the stop portions 38 of the stops 34.
What I claim is:
l. A radius-to-tangent grinding wheel dresser comprising a base adapted to be mounted adjacent the grinding wheel to be dressed, an elongated hollow mount structure rockably mounted on said base and having a rectilinear guideway disposed transverse to the rocking axis of said mount structure, a carriage mounted on said mount structure in engagement with said guideway for reciprocation therealong, a drum rotatably mounted adjacent said carriage, a drum-rotating device drivingly connected to said drum, an elongated flexible motion-transmitting member operatively connecting said drum to said carriage for reciprocating said carriage in response to the rotation of said drum, a dressing tool holder structure connected to said carriage for travel therewith and for rocking therewith in response to the rocking of said mount structure, and a grinding wheel dressing tool mounted on said holder structure.
2. A radius-to-tangent grinding wheel dresser comprising a base adapted to be mounted adjacent the grinding wheel to be dressed, an elongated hollow mount structure rockably mounted on said base and having a rectilinear guideway disposed transverse to the rocking axis of said mount structure, a carriage mounted on said mount structure in engagement with said guideway for reciprocation therealong, a drum rotatably mounted adjacent said car= riage, a drum-rotating device drivingly connected to said drum, an elongated liexible motion-transmitting member operatively connecting said drum to said carriage for reciprocating said carriage in response to the rotation of said drum, a dressing tool holder structure connected to said carriage for travel therewith and for rocking therewith in response to the rocking of said mount structure, and a grinding wheel dressing tool mounted on said holder structure, said motion-transmitting member including a cable wound around said drum and anchored to said carriage.
3. A radius-to-tangent grinding wheel dresser comprising a base adapted to be mounted adjacent the grinding wheel to be dressed, an elongated hollow mount structure rockably mounted on said base and having a rectilinear guideway disposed transverse to the rocking axis of said mount structure, a carriage mounted on. said mount structure in engagement with said guideway for reciprocation therealong, a drum rotatably mounted adjacent said carriage, adrum-rotating device drivingly connected to said drum, an elongated tlexible motion-transmitting member operatively connecting said drum to said carriage for reciprocating said carriage in response to the rotation of said drum, a dressing tool holder structure connected to said carriage for travel therewith and for rocking therewith in response to the rocking of said mount structure, a grinding wheel dressing tool mounted on said holder structure, and a guiding element disposed between said drum and carriage and guidingly engaging said motiontransmitting member.
4. A radius-to-tangent grinding Wheel dresser comprising a base adapted to be mounted adjacent the grinding wneel to be dressed, an elongated hollow mount structure rockably mounted on said base and having a rectilinear guideway disposed transverse to the rocking axis of said mount structure, a carriage mounted on said mount structure in engagement with said guideway for reciprocation therealong, a drum rotatably mounted adjacent said carriage, a drum-rotating device drivingly connected to said drum, an elongated iiexible motion-transmitting member operatively connecting said drum to said carriage for reciprocating said carriage in response to the rotation of said drum, a dressing tool holder structure connected to said carriage for travel therewith and for rocking therewith in response to the rocking of said mount structure, a grinding wheel dressing tool mounted on said holder structure, said drum having a bore therein, a detent reciprocably mounted in said bore, and a detent-engaging portion connected to said dressing tool holder structure for engagement by said detent in the co-axial centered position of said holder structure with said mount structure.

A radius-.to-tangent grinding wheel dresser comprising@ `base iadapted to be :mounted adjacent the grinding wheeltobe dressed, an elongated hollow mount structure rockably mounted on said base and having a yrectilinear guideway disposed :transverse 'to the rocking axis of said :mount structure, -a ycarriage 4mounted on said mount structureinfengagement withsaidguideway forreciprocation ,-therealong, .a-.drum rotatably Amounted 4adjacent said .carriage, .affirm-rotating device ,drivingly vcounected to said drum, a pair .of rotary guiding elements rotatably mounted on said mount structure in laterallyspaced relationship on opposite sides of said drum, an elongated exible motion-transmitting member trained around said guiding elements` and operatively connecting said drum to said carriage for reciprocating said carriage in response to the rotation of said drum, a dressing tool holder structure connected to said carriage for travel therewith and for rocking therewith in response to the rocking of said mount structure, and a grinding wheel dressing tool mounted on said holder structure, said carriage having a plurality of guideway-engaging portions disposed in laterally-spaced relationship, and said drum being mounted in the space between said guideWay-engaging portions.
