Cutting-edges, shaping and treating; wheels; processes, special.-A cutting-edge is formed on a razor or other blade 23 by means of a grinding- wheel 8, the blade having a previously formed bevel or face which is supported by a member 29 right up to the edge, the grinding operation also removing a part of the support; by this means, no burr is formed on the blade edge. The grinding-wheel is mounted on a carriage 3 slidable on the machine bed 1 and held up to a cam 40 by a spring 38, rotation of the cam causing the wheel to approach, and to recede from the blade. The support 29 is in the form of a cylinder, and after each blade is treated is partially rotated, to present a fresh surface to the new blade, by a weighted cord 35 and a ratchet and pawl gear 48, 49 acting or the cylinder by worm-gearing 34 and actuated, through a rod 44, by a cam 42 carried by the shaft 41 of cam 40. The blade 23 is mounted in a hinged holder 1'J, 21 carried by a leaf spring 20 secured to a block 17, which is adjustably carried by pointed screws 15, 16 in a carrier 13 adjustable in a guide 12 on the machine bed.
