Abstract

284,010. Perl, A. H. F., and Gunn, F. V. Oct. 20, 1926. Cutting-edges, shaping and treating; guides and rests.-A cutting-edge is formed on metal &c. by two rotating rollers 1, 2 having formed thereon interengaging helical projections of the same or opposite hand, the edge being drawn parallel to the axes of the rollers during grinding. Figs. 2 and 3 show a machine wherein the cutting-edge is moved across the rollers by hand, the rollers being mounted on spindles 7, 8 carried respectively by a member 14 and V-shaped members 11, 12 pivoted on a bolt 15; the distance apart of the rollers is adjustable by means of screws 20, 21, the members 11, 12 may be adjusted by screws 18, 19, and the rollers are driven by a belt passing round pulleys 3, 4, 5. In a modification, the rollers are driven by worms of opposite hand on the shaft of an electric motor engaging worm-wheels on the roller spindles. As applied to the grinding of safety razor blades 59, Fig. 7, these are carried by a chain comprising bladeholders 50, links 51, pins and rollers 53 engaged by sprocket wheels 54, the blades being carried across the helical rollers, guides being provided to ensure correct contact of the blades with the rollers; in a modification, the blades are secured to a strip by which they are drawn, in contact with the rollers, through guides. Wheels and other tools.-The rollers may be formed from abrasive material, or of compressed cotton, of leather, or of steel fed with abrasive material. Several pairs of meshing rollers may be mounted in line, for example, for coarse grinding, for fine grinding and for honing.
