[Class 60.] In an apparatus for grinding, lapping, polishing, or honing the edges of safety razor blades, or of strip steel from which the blades are made, the blanks or strips r, Fig. 3, are carried past the abrading appliances on the peripheries of two rotating feed wheels c, cc provided with locating-pins f of involute form, the blades or strips being held to the peripheries by means of pierced flexible bands or strips g, and being automatically transferred from the first to the second feed wheel. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, the two feed-wheels c, cc are arranged vertically one above the other, and are driven by worm and wheel gearing at equal but opposite speeds. The clamping bands g, gg associated with the two wheels are carried by pairs of pulleys h, hh so disposed that they contact with the peripheries of the feed-wheels over the arcs through which the blades move when being operated on by the grinding &c. wheels j, jj. After being carried by the upper feed-wheel past the upper wheels j, jj, by which the edges on one face of the blade are simultaneously treated, the blade is released by the flexible band g, but is still held on the wheel by a guard (not shown) extending round the periphery of the wheel and forming a channel for the coolant water. At the lower part of the wheel the blade is transferred by a stripper device (not shown) to the lower feed wheel, by which it is carried in a similar way past the lower grinding wheels, which treat the edges on the other face. Coolant water is pumped from a tank at the base of the machine and delivered to the upper grinding wheels, a system of water-guards (not shown) surrounding both the grinding and feed wheels, of which the latter are provided with channels w, Fig. 3, coacting with inturned edges on the guards. The axes of the grinding-wheels j, jj, which are arranged one on either side of the feed-wheels, are substantially in the planes of the feed wheels, the operating surfaces of the grinding wheels being approximately hyperboloidal. The bearings for the feed-wheel spindles are carried on slides enabling the wheels to be adjusted towards and from the blades, and the slides may be adjustable both horizontally and vertically. The grinding-wheels are trued by diamonds g carried by the feed-wheels in the same circumferential lines as the edges being ground on the blades. Interlocking switches ensure that the motors driving the grinding-wheels are running before the motor driving the feed wheels operates.
