[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A surface grinding machine comprises a grinding-wheel 10 carried by a housing 13 on which is an electric motor 12 driving the wheel, the housing being movable in transverse guides 15 on the face of a carrier 16 which rotates about an axis at right-angles to the spindle of the wheel 10. The carrier 16 is secured to a hollow spindle 17 mounted in bearings 18 on a carriage 19 slidable longitudinally on the base 30 by rack gearing operated by a hand-wheel 32, and the spindle is rotated by belt gearing 26, through a countershaft, from an electric motor mounted on the carriage 19. The housing 13 is moved across the carrier by a rack 35 engaged by a pinion 36 on a shaft 37 carried eccentrically in the spindle 17 and driven, through gearing 40-43, by a pinion 45 on a shaft 46 journalled in a casing 44 attached to the spindle 17 and having thereon two wormwheels 48, 49 driven by electric motors 50, 51 mounted on the casing 44, the motors being controlled selectively to vary the drive to the shaft 46 to vary the traversing speed of the housing 13. In order to ensure that the spindle 17 will revolve truly in the bearings 18, spring-pressed plungers 52 are provided in recesses 53 to bear on the pulley 20, and the cover plate 47 of the casing 44 has a hollow projection 54 receiving a hardened face 56, between which and a similar, and adjustable, face 57 in a column 59, a ball 55 is disposed. Current is supplied to the motors by slip rings 62 and brushes 63. A guard 64 on the housing 13 is provided with a holder 65 for a cutting too] 66, so that work mounted on a table 34 can be cut by the tool 66 and then ground.
