Abstract

1,163,932. Grinding. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. 19 Dec., 1966 [14 Feb., 1966], No. 6400/66. Heading B3D. Apparatus for sharpening a blade 1 comprises rotatable sharpening wheels 4, 6 arranged to engage respectively the two surfaces 2, 3 at the junction of which the cutting edge 1A lies, the wheels being adapted to be displaced from one another along the cutting edge and to be reciprocated during rotation along their axes of rotation. The blade 1 and wheels 4, 6 are driven in the directions indicated by motors 5, 7, 9, the wheels 4, 6 having peripheral speeds of 3000 to 6000 feet/min. and the blade 1 is rotated at 50 to 500 r.p.m. The wheels may be diamond impregnated or have an aluminium oxide surface and are reciprocated in the direction of the arrows A, B. The operation of the two wheels is continued until removal of material ceases so as to produce an edge without burrs. In another arrangement, the wheels sharpen an edge formed by two surfaces at 90 degrees to each other. In a further arrangement for sharpening a bacon slicer cutter, the axes of the wheels are substantially in line and adjustable to the angle of the cutting edge.
