Abstract

1325903 Grinding W P MORITZ 11 Aug 1970 [18 Aug 1969] 38586/70 Heading B3D A device for sharpening the knife of a guillotine comprises a base 10 which may be placed on and moved over the surface of the guillotine table, an electric motor 14 mounted on the base for driving at least one grinding wheel 35, 36, and means for adjusting the angle between the face of the grinding wheel and the guillotine table. The base is of sheet metal having feet 11 of low friction plastics material, and a cover 13 is hinged at 12 to the base and can be secured in angularly adjustable position by a screw-andslot arrangement 15, 16. The motor 14 is secured to the cover which also carries a rheostat 21 for controlling the speed of the motor. The front of the cover is hinged at 25 to a carrier 24 carrying a pair of grinding wheels 35, 36 driven by respective belts 33, 34 from pulleys 32 on the shaft of the motor, the carrier being secured in angularly adjustable position by a screw-and-slot arrangement 28. The arrangement of the hinges permits the grinding wheels to be set at a desired high or low position (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) at an angle 1 degree to the cutting surface of the block. The depth of cut of the grinding wheels is determined by adjustable fingers 38, 39. In another embodiment, the angular setting of the grinding wheels is determined by plates which are inclined by 1 degree to the faces of the grinding wheel and are engaged with the surface of the blade, the plates being retracted during grinding. In other embodiments, the carrier and housing are adjustable about a single hinge. A cover 63, Fig. 11, may be provided to collect abrassive or metal particles.
