1343712 Grinding TECMED AG 25 Aug 1971 [26 Aug 1970 13 Aug 1971] 39796/71 Heading B3D Apparatus for sharpening manual and cutting- machine knives comprises grinding discs 6, 7 positioned one on each side of a central drive 1 and in non-rotating protective housings 11, 12 having slits for guiding a knife blade. The grinding discs 6, 7 are mounted on holding discs 4, 5 on the shaft 2, 3 extending from the central drive consisting of a motor and geared drive. The shafts also mount further holding discs 8 for fine polishing or smoothing discs 9, 10. The housings 11, 12 extend from each side of the central motor housing 1 and have slits 13, 14 which act as guides for the knife blade during fine polishing or smoothing by the discs 9, 10. A tube 15 is mounted on each housing 11, 12 and is formed with recesses 16, 17 providing access to the slits 12, 13, the tubes being split and clamped to the housings by bolts 18. A plastic cover 19 closes the end of each tube and is formed with slits 20, 21 acting as guides during grinding of a knife blade, slits 20 being inclined at a different angle from that of slits 21. Cooling is effected by liquid in containers 22 and the axis of the shaft 2, 3 may be offset relative to the axis of the housing and the covers 19 may have internal spiral grooves to intensify the cooling. A swivel shaft 27 may be secured to one of the tubes 15 and adjustably connected to a guide arm 28, in turn, adjustably connected to an arm 29 which carries a handle 31 and an adjustable pivot 34 secured to a plate 36 to which a cutting machine knife 37 can be clamped with the centre of curvature of its edge aligned with the pivot 34. Handle 31 permits rocking of the holder about the axis of swivel shaft 27 during mounting of the knife on the plate 36, and a handle 41 secured to the plate is provided for rocking the plate, and hence the knife, about the axis of pivot 34 during grinding of the knife.
