Abstract

1,117,190. Grinding. L. A. BETTCHER. 12 Dec., 1966 [13 Dec., 1965], No. 55647/66. Heading B3D. A sharpening device for ring-like knife blades B comprises knife holder means 12 supported on a base structure 10 for movement to and from a knife sharpening position, blade grinding means 13 including a rotating grinder wheel 14, and means to reciprocate the blade grinding means along a given line for moving the grinding wheel along a surface of a blade of a knife supported in the holder. The blade consists of an annulus having a cylindrical inner surface and an outer bevelled surface to form a cutting edge. The blade grinding means consists of a wheel 14 driven by an electric motor 70 on a plate 72 which is slidable on the base structure and guided for straight line motion in a direction parallel to the axis of the wheel 14 by bolts extending from the plate through slots in the base structure. A lever 84 is manually movable about a pivot 85 and has a slot engaging a pin 87 on the plate for effecting movement of the sharpening means. The knife holder means has a base 30 formed at one end with a wall 31 having a clamp 34 for the handle K of the knife blade. A post 32 extends upwardly from the other end of the base for receiving the supporting and driving structure R for the blade. The blade is located by a pair of pins 50 on the post and is urged against the pins by a spring 52 mounted on a head 45. A diamond dressing tool 15 is also carried by the head which is rotatable on the post by a handle 47 to engage the spring 52 with the blade during a sharpening operation or to position the tool 15 for a dressing operation, the grinding wheel being reciprocated by the handle for either operation. During sharpening, the blade is rotated by a flexible drive cable 96. The holder means is slidable on the base structure and guided for adjustment movement by a screw 65 by bolts which extend from the holder through slots in the base structure.
