Abstract

962,592. Sharpening machine cutters in situ. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 16, 1963 [Jan. 31, 1962], No. 3695/62. Heading B3D. [Also in Division D1] In fibre-stapling apparatus, continuously moving filamentary yarn carried round the periphery of a wheel 5 is severed by the cutting edge or edges of a positively rotated circular knife 3 (or a series thereof) periodically and/or successively passing through slots 4. Each blade edge is engaged on opposite sides by two abrasive stones 6 and 7, mounted on separate or common spindles at an angle to the axis of the blade and positively driven, or rotated by engagement with the rotating blade, or stationary, so that continuous sharpening occurs. Blades and stones are mounted on a turn-table 1 rotating synchronously with wheel 5 to effect the cutting. Each blade 3 is tilted at an angle to the turn-table which is itself tilted relative to wheel 5 so that the point of contact of the blade with the yarn moves, at a similar velocity, in the direction of the yarn during passage of the blade therethrough. The relative speeds of rotation of turn-table 1 and blades 3 (e.g. 500: 101) may be such as to equalize wear over the cutting edges and ensure that each blade is sharpened between successive cuts. Specifications 682,473 and 720,233 are referred to.
