Abstract

1415744 Reciprocating saws LKLOOSTER 15 June 1973 [19 June 1972] 28655/73 Heading B5L A method of sawing wood and/or synthetic material with the aid of a saw having a straight or substantially straight edge comprises moving the ends of the saw blade in opposite directions of rotation about circles struck from axes lying in a plane at right angles to the direction of feed movement of the workpiece, at least one of said ends being rotated at a variable speed during each revolution so that the angle of the cutting edge relative to the direction of feed movement of the workpiece continually changes so that in each stroke only part of the thickness of the wood or material is cut. In a machine for performing the method a workpiece 35 is fed to a saw blade 32 by upper and lower sets of driven rollers. The ends of the blade 32 are supported eccentrically on discs 30 31 driven in opposite directions by the shafts 28, 29 of asynchronous electric motors 26, 27. The shafts also carry eccentrically mounted gears 37, 38 connected by a toothed belt 39, the gears being so arranged that they vary the rotational speeds of the shafts 28, 29 to maintain the distance between the supports 33, 34 of the saw blade constant. A number of saw blades may be carried by the supports 33, 34 as indicated in Fig. 3. Jets of air may be applied to the saw blade 32 intermittently from nozzles 40, 41, to clear and cool it. The saw blade teeth are arranged in two groups the teeth of one group being orientated toward or away from those of the other group depending on the directions of rotation of the discs 30, 31.
