Abstract
326,917. Heide, H. C., (Auto Strop Patents Corporation). Jan. 11, 1929. Cutting-edges, shaping and treating; wheels.-A machine for sharpening the edge of a metal strip 5 consists of a base 1 upon which are pivoted, at 6, studs 8 adjustably carrying bearing members 3 supporting grinding or honing discs 4. The discs are mounted, by means of plates 25, 26 and nuts 28, on spindles 11 carried by sleeves 12 journaled in the arms of the members 3; endwise movement of the sleeves is prevented bv discs 13, 14 secured to the arms, and the spindles 11 are rotated with, but axially slidable in, the sleeves by keys 16 and keyways 15. The sleeves are rotated by pulleys 17 thereon carrying gear wheels 18, and the spindles 11 are adjustable axially by nuts 19 screwing on extensions 14a of the discs 14, springs 21 being provided to keep the spindles pressed towards the work; the nuts 19 are locked by spring pins 23. The two spindles 11 are rotated in unison by gears 30 engaging the gears 18 and connected by universal joints 33, 34; one or both of the pulleys 17 may be belt driven. The grinding-discs have convex acting faces provided with tapered and curved projections 4a and recesses 4<b>, the spindles 11 being so inclined that the projections of one disc enter the recesses of the other disc at one side of their axes. Guides and rests.-The strip is fed by rollers 46 driven by gearing from the main shaft of the machine and is guided in a slot 41a in a bar 41 supported in standards 42 and adjustable by screws 44; screws 45 serves to lock the strip in adjusted position. Blades or pieces cut to length may be sharpened, the supports therefor being arranged to suit the length of the pieces.
