Cutlery and like blades.-Apparatus for producing safety razor blades from a blank consisting of a steel band 1 provided with elevations, ridges, channels &c. consists of a frame 2 supporting the band on a roll from which it is unwound and passed through a furnace 3, a hardening apparatus consisting of a vessel 4 containing liquid or molten metal, a tempering apparatus 5, apparatus 5' for removing oxide &c., grinding-apparatus 6, apparatus 15 for polishing the flat sides, apparatus 16, 16<1> for marking or etching the band, apparatus 17 for drying, apparatus 18 for final polishing, and a press 19 for severing the blades. The grinding-apparatus 6 consists of frames 7 supporting driving rollers 8 and tensioning-rollers 9, rough grinding, intermediate grinding, fine grinding of different grades and polishing of the edges being performed respectively at 10, 11, 12 and 13, and 14. The band is supported in its plane adjacent the grinding-wheels 20 by rollers 21 which are contoured to engage the 'recess &c. in the band to prevent lateral movement, the upper rollers being spring- or weight-pressed, and adapted to be lifted for removal of the band by members 53. The grinding-wheels are mounted in pairs on shafts 30 and operate in each group on diagonally opposite faces of the edges of the blade. The shafts are carried by frames pivoted in pairs at 33, and movable to and from the work by screws operated, through gearing 37, by hand wheels 36, the screws bearing on abutments 38 on a shaft 39, which also carries abutments 45 for separating the grinding-wheels against the action of a spring, for removal of the band. The shafts 30 are adjustable, so that their axes lie at an angle v, Fig. 4, to the plane of the band, by handwheels 35 which move ball bearings 32 at one end of the shaft, the bearing 31 at the other end of the shaft being pivoted to the arm 34; each shaft may carry only a single wheel 20 pivotally mounted or may carry more than two wheels. The wheels of each group are driven from a common electric motor 41. The band may have therein holes 28 for use when in the razor frame, and slots 29 to facilitate separation at 27 of the blade lengths from the band. The blades, as they leave the press, are mounted on pins 49 in a holder 46 being clamped thereon by a cover 48 and a screw 47, the ends of the blade being rounded in a separate grinding-machine. The apparatus may be arranged for the treatment of single edged blades; the ridges in the band may be inclined to the edges thereof. The finished blades with ridges and grooves do not require guide pins in the razor, the central screw thereof preventing longitudinal movement of the blade. The rollers 8 may be given a continuous feed or an intermittent feed and may be loaded by springs or weights; the grinding-wheels may be shaped by a diamond tool or by running two wheels together.
