Abstract
484,923. Grinding &c. wire, rods, &c. HOWES, S. R., and FOX & CO., Ltd., S. Nov. 13, 1936, No. 31098. [Class 60] A machine for grinding, polishing, burnishing, &c. wire, rods, or other elongated articles comprises headstocks 1, 2 on a base 3 and having rotatably supported therein, by hollow shafts 5, a head 4. One shaft 5 carries a gear wheel 6 driven by a pinion 7 and on the face of the headstock 1 is a fixed bevel gear 8. The head 4 carries parallel shafts 9, 10 carrying grinding &c. discs 11, 12 which may overlap and operate with their flat opposed faces or may be coplanar and operate with their peripheries on the wire &c. 13, which is fed axially through the shafts 5. The shafts 9, 10 are splined to pinions 14, 15 driven by gears 16, 17 on shafts 18, 19, which carry, at their outer ends, bevel pinions 20, engaging the gear 8 so that as the head 4 is rotated the discs 11, 12 are driven. The shafts 9, 10 may be pressed axially to compensate for wear of, and to apply feed to the discs 11, 12 by levers 31, 32 engaging the ends of the shafts and moved about their pivots 33, 34 by centrifugal force due to weights 29, 30 on the levers. Stops, 35, 36 are provided to limit the feed of the discs 11, 12. One of the discs 11, 12 may be non-abrasive, or both may serve to burnish the wire &c. Water or oil with or without abrasive may be supplied by a pipe 22.
