Rollers and the like, treating; gauges; wheels.-In apparatus for grinding and polishing copper &c. cylinders, sleeves, rollers, &c. the sleeve a is supported by a mandrel b in bearings above an adjustable trough b<4> containing water, and is ground &c. by two rotating stones s, of which one may be a roughing stone, and the other a smoothing stone. The stones are carried bv a head i adjustable vertically on a pillar c<1> by a screw i<3>, and the pillar can be slewed round on its supporting carriage c by releasing clamping nuts c<2>. The carriage is moved along the work on a bed c<3> by means of a rack d<5> and a pinion d<4>, which is driven from a shaft d<1> by worm gearing d<1>, d<2>, the worm being rotatable with and slidable on the shaft. The carriage is reciprocated along the bed, its motion being reversed by a bar e, Fig. 3, which moves a belt from a loose pulley g<2> on to either a pulley g<1> or a pulley g<3>, which through bevel gearing f<4> - - f<6> and gears f<1> - - f<3> drive the shaft d alternately in opposite directions, a main shaft f also being driven in opposite directions as the belt is moved; the bar e is moved by projections e<4> on the carriage and adjustable stops e<1> on the bar. The stones are driven, in reverse directions as the direction of motion of the carriage is reversed, from the shaft f through gearing h<1>, a shaft h, and gearing h<2> - - h<4>. In order to allow of vertical adjustment of the stones, and descent of these to give the required diameter to the roller, the spindles h<5> of the stones are rotatable in and supported by collars h<6> on sleeves j slidable in sleeves k which are slidable in the head i. The sleeves j each have therein a slot within which engages an eccentric pin j<5> on a spindle j<3> rotatable in a bracket j<2> fixed to the sleeve k and extending through a slot i<5> in the head, the spindle being rotatable by a lever j<4>; when the lever is mcved from the vertical the stones automatically fall to the extent allowed by the pin j<5> and the slot- To allow of adjustable descent of the stones and to compensate for wear, the head i has thereon a stop i<7> and is cut away at i<8> to admit a bracket i<9> secured to the sleeve k and carrying an adjustable screw l<1> which is adapted to engage the stop i<7>. The stones are mounted eccentrically on their spindles, to equalize wear, by means of plates s<1> and rings s<2>, Fig. 10. In Fig. 12 is shown means for bringing one stone or the other into use, and consisting of a lever h' carrying a gear wheel h<9> which is brought into contact either with gear wheel h<10> or wheel h<11>, a lock h<12> being provided.
