[Class 60.] A machine for grinding, polishing, &c. bars comprises two pairs b, b<1> of feed rollers for conveying the bar a between two grinding- wheels c, d carried by slides c<1>, d<1> adjustable in a carriage e slidable in guides e<1>. The carriage e is counterbalanced by a weight g, or by hydraulic, spring or other means, and is movable so as to accommodate curved parts of the bar. The rollers b are adjustable by hand-wheels b<2>, and the slides c<1>, d<1> are adjustable by screws k secured to the slides and engaged by nuts j<2> rotatable through wormgearing, by hand-wheels h ; one slide only may be adjustable, and if one side only of the work is to be ground, one of the grinding- wheels may be replaced by a guide wheel or a pressure wheel, to which or to the remaining grinding wheel additional spring or weight loading may be applied. The guides e may be in the form of V-grooved rollers carried by antifriction bearings, or the carriage e may have brackets carrying grooved wheels engaging guide rods or pillars the wheels may have antifriction bearings. In a modification, antifriction rollers may be incorporated in the faces of the guides e<1>.
