Disc apparatus; rollers, treating.-A machine for grinding rolls &c. comprises a frame 10, on which is mounted a carriage 11 in a rigid manner and a carriage 24 slidable on guides 22, 23. The carriage 24 is moved by means of a handwheel 39 mounted on a screw 36, which engages a nut 40 on the carriage. Abrasive wheels 17, 31, serving respectively as grinding and regulating wheels, are mounted on the carriages 11, 24 and are belt-driven from variable-speed motors 20, 34. The carriage 24 has an overhang 42 protruding between the wheels 17, 31 and slidably supported on a vertically adjustable member 43. A carrier frame 52 which is supported on the overhang 42 is adjusted thereon by a screw 48 and locked in position by a bolt 56. A workcarrier 61, which supports the rolls 62 to be operated upon, is secured at an adjustable inclination to posts 58, 59 on the frame 52. The work is fed between guide-plates 63, which are secured on each side, of the forward end of the carrier 61, to the wheels 17, 31, of which the former is rapidly rotating in a downward direction with respect to the work and thereby grinding it, while the regulating-wheel is slowly rotating in an upward direction and thereby rotates the work. The regulating-wheel 31 is mounted on an axis slightly inclined to the axis of the grinding-wheel 17 and thus feeds the work along the carrier 61 between a second set of guide-plates to a trough 65 and shoot 67, from which the work is discharged into a tank 71 containing a liquid for cushioning the fall of the work. A casing 72 secured to the frame 10 surrounds the wheels 17, 31 and is slotted to allow of movement of the axle of the regulating-wheel. The front of the casing is provided with cover-plates 73 secured by fixed latches 74 and movable latches 75. Adjustably mounted on the cover-plate 73 is a plate 76 which may be positioned close to the carrier frame 52 after adjustment thereof. A pump circulates cooling- liquid from the tank 71 to the casing 72 by way of a pipe 79. A bar 80 secured to the casing by means of slotted members 81 prevents the rolls G2 from leaving the carrier 61 while they are being operated upon.
