Abstract

181,459. Anderson, T., and Pearson, J. W. March 10, 1921. Disc apparatus; cutting-edges, shaping and treating.-A cutlery-grinding machine comprising a grinder 2 and a blade-holder 3, which is mounted on a table 4 pivoted to a reciprocating carriage 6, is arranged so that the table is moved towards the grinder at the end of its idle stroke and the beginning of its grinding stroke by an angularly moving subsidiary cam 16 so that the path of the blade-holder conforms to the shape of the bolster of the blade. A main cam is formed of two drums 27, 30 connected respectively by radial webs or spokes to hubs 24, 28 keyed to a shaft 25; or the hub 28 may be mounted on the hub 24. The shaped edges of the drums 27, 30 form between them a cam-groove 8, any wear of which can be taken up by moving one drum relatively to the other. The main cam may be driven by a pinion 32 gearing with an internally-toothed ring 33 secured to the drum 30. A member 10 of a pair of members 10, 11 secured to a rocking- shaft 9 engages the cam 8, the member 11 being adjustably linked to the table 4, which is thereby reciprocated. The table 4 is moved away from the grinder about its pivot 5 by a spring 13, and towards the grinder by an arm 15, which may carry a roller, by the cam 16 acting on an adjustable sliding bar 16<B>. The cam 16 is mounted in bearings adjustable in a slot 16<A>, and is operated by a spring-controlled bar 19 from a facecam 21 detachably secured to the drum 27. An adjustable face 22 on the cam 16 may be used in addition to or as a substitute for the adjustable bar 16<B>. At the end of the grinding stroke, the arm 15 is freed by contact with an adjustable abutment 23. The grinder 2 is moved axially by a screw rotated by gears 34, 35 from a hand-wheel 36. A spring-controlled belt-shifter 38 is moved by a pedal 39 and is held by a pawl 41, which is released at the end of a cycle of operations by a detent 43 carried by the drum 30. A brake-shoe 44 is carried by the belt-shifter. The bladeholder 3 may be mounted on pivots 45 and oscillated by an arm 47 engaging an inclined plane 46 or slotted member, which may be reciprocated. " Whittening " may be rendered unnecessary by making the face of the grinder to cover the major portion of the blade and by shaping the cam 8 as a sine curve so as to vibrate the carriage 6 during its grinding stroke. According to the Provisional Specification, a hand-lever may be connected to the carriage, after disconnecting the latter from the means for automatically reciprocating it, so that the carriage may be reciprocated by hand for " whittening " the blades; also the means for moving the arm 15 may be rendered inoperative so that the blade is held against the grinder when travelling in either direction.
