Abstract

22,620. Smith, H. Nov. 17. Wheel apparatus. - A machine for grinding cutlery, penknives, pruning-knives, edge-tools, &c. comprises two annular grinding-wheels 1 mounted side by side on vertical axes and adjustable by means of hand - wheels 5, and a pivoted bed 6 on which is slidably mounted a table 9 carrying two work-holders 8. The bed is pivoted at 7 and is raised to bring the work into contact with the grinding-wheels at the beginning of an outward stroke and away from them at the conclusion of the stroke by means of a stepped cam 11, mounted on a shaft 12 and adapted to engage a roller 13 which is carried by a cross-piece 14 connected at its ends to links 15. On depression of the roller by the cam, the links operate, through levers 16 and standards 17, to raise the table; the cam may be shaped as shown in Fig. 3 and may have separate pieces 28 attached thereto, or may be suitably shaped adjacent to the inner step thereof, when it is desired to grind the work to a greater extent as the end of the outward stroke is reached, for example in the case of penknives or other knives in which the cutting- edge is curved. The table is reciprocated by means of a cam-groove 19 formed in the body of the stepped cam and adapted to be engaged by a roller on a lever 20, which is linked to one arm 21 of a bell-crank lever, the other arm 22 of which is connected to the table by means of a link 24; the cam-groove-may be shaped to give a quick-return motion to the table. For grinding pruning-knives &c., the guides for the table in the bed 6 may be shaped so that the whole of the curved edge of the blade travels along the same path. In grinding cutlery, the work is ground against the inner edge of the annular grinding - wheels, being thereby ground convex; for hollow grinding, the blades are ground on the outer edge of the wheels. When files &c. are to be ground, they are arranged to be presented flat to the wheels at right-angles to the axis thereof. The bed and the parts carried thereby are enclosed within a trough 27 to collect the cooling-fluid. Two pieces of work are operated on at the same time and may be reversed and changed from one holder to the other, to grind the other sides, at the conclusion of the outward stroke.
