Abstract

187,004. Herbert, E. G. July 9, 1921. Saws, sharpening.-A hack-saw or other straight saw is sharpened by bringing it into meshing engagement with toothed guides and simultaneously into engagement with a grinding- wheel, the teeth on the guides serving to guide and limit the movement of the saw in relation to the grinding-wheel. The saw e, Fig. 7, is mounted on a table f which is s 1 i d a b I v mounted on a slotted table c and is moved by hand or by power to bring the saw into engagement with guides a, b and with the grinding- wheel m. The guides are fixed to the table c, or to two tables with a gap between them; the guides may comprise portions of a saw similar to that being sharpened, or may comprise milled strips. The table f is moved on the table c in a circular path by means of an eccentric h of adjustable eccentricity, the table f being maintained parallel to itself by means of spring- pressed triggers k carried by a shaft j and bearing against the table. The blade is held on the table by spring blades l<1> carried by a spring- pressed lever pivoted to the table and carrying also a stud l<2> which bears against the back of the saw. The pivotal movement of the lever l is limited by an adjustable stop l<3> which bears against the edge of the table. The grinding- wheel m is bevelled on its periphery and is adjustable towards and from the saw by a screw g, and parallel thereto by a screw r acting on the axle s of the wheel against the pressure of a spring t, a ball bearing u taking the thrust. In operation, the grinding-wheel is adjustable to project into the slot in the table c, and its bevelled periphery occupies the space of one of the teeth missing between the two guides a, b. The movement of the table f brings the blade. teeth against the guide-teeth, and, by the combined effect of the movement of the table, the slipping of the saw on the table, and the action of the lever e, the blade moves in the path shown in Fig. 5; thus all of the teeth are ground both on the back and on the front to the correct shape.
