[Class 60] A machine for sharpening scissors, shears, &c., comprises a grinding-wheel 5 driven manually or by power and mounted on a bed 1, upon which also are mounted two brackets 12 to which are pivotally and adjustably secured, by screws 11, the arms 10 of a yoke, the other member of which consists of a guide rod 8 parallel to the axis of the wheel 5. On the rod is slidable, by a handle 24, a carriage 7 provided with an overhanging arm 13 the free end of which is formed as one member 14 of a workclamp, the member 14 having a vertical face parallel to the inclined end 13<a> of the arm 13 to form an abutment for the stop faces of the blades of a pair of fully-opened scissors. The scissors are clamped on the member 14 by a member 15 moved by a screw 17, an abutment screw 18 for the member and a spring 19 also being provided. The blade being ground is pressed down on the periphery of the wheel 5 partly by gravity and partly by a spring 20 connected to the arm 13 and, at its other end, sliding along a guide rail 21 ; a leaf spring or a compression spring may be used. In operation the blade, set to correct height by the screws 11 and a gauge piece 26, is reciprocated along the wheel 5. In a modification the arm 13 passes from under the carriage 7 over this to the front, thus enabling a shield to be used to protect the bearing surfaces from dust &c.
