Abstract
236,446. Roberts, J. G. Nov. 26, 1924. Cutting-edges, shaping and treating.-The cutters or blades of mowing or like machines are sharpened by a grinding wheel 24 which is traversed along the cutter. The cutter and the grinding wheel are supported in bearings in frames 2, 3 mounted on a base 1, the frame 3 being adjustable longitudinally of the base to accommodate cutters of different lengths. The cutter spindle 21 is supported in bearings 13, 15 which are adjustable by screws 16 and nuts 18 across the frames towards or from the grinding wheel, and the cutter spindle carries a dog 14<x> driven by a projection 14 on a pulley 11 mounted on a. hollow stub shaft 12 extending from the bearing 13. The grinding wheel spindle has a plain part 23 and a screwed part 22 and is supported in a two-part removable and internallyscrewed bearing carried by the frames 3, and in a pulley 28 which runs in a bearing 25, which is pivotally supported by pins 26. The shaft has a keyway 31 and is driven by a pin on the pulley. The pulleys 11, 28 are driven by belts 35, 33 from pulleys 6, 7 mounted on a shaft 8. In operation, as the pulleys are rotated the grinding wheel engages the rotating cutter blades and moves therealong; at the end of a complete pass the grinding wheel and its shaft are removed and replaced at the starting position. The fixed blade of a mower when being ground is mounted in clamps 37, 38<x>, Fig. 6, which have projections 38 fitting in the bearings 13, 15.
