Abstract

479,651. Sharpening twist &c. drills. BARTON, E. G. C. April 22, 1937, No. 11537. [Class 60] A device for sharpening twist and other drills comprises a base 5 to which is secured adjustably, by slots 27, 28, a vertical template 6 having a slot 7 and a horizontal part 8. Clamped to the base is a hand-operated grindstone 9, to the work-rest 10 of which is secured a curved guide 11 having end stops 13, 14, the stop 13 being farther from the axis of the grindstone than is the stop 14. The drill 22 is held in a clamp comprising upper and lower parts pressed onto the drill by a screw 23, a U-shaped extension 24 being secured in lugs 19, 19A, 20, 20A on the clamp by a screw 25. In operation, the drill is set by a reference line on the clamp and is pressed against the rotating grindstone, the cutting end of the drill resting on and being moved along the guide 11, whilst the extension 24 rests on the template 6 with one limb in the slot 7. In order to prevent scoring of the guide 11, the point end of the drill may be provided with a rider which rests on the guide and may be in the form of a barrel carried by an extended part of one limb of the member 24. In a modification, the curved guide 11 may form part of a link mechanism whereby the drill point is moved along a curved path. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the drill is ground by a grindstone 9 which is rolled along a straight edge 40 whilst resting on an inclined support 39, and the drill point rests in a slot 7 in a template 6 placed adjacent to the stone 9, whilst the extension 24 is moved along a curved guide 11. A rotary stop 41 serves, at the end of each forward roll of the grindstone 9, slightly to rotate the grindstone.
