Cutting-edges shaping and treating.-A device for holding plane irons and other tools during grinding consists of a frame a having pivoted thereon, at c, a work-rest b adjustable by means of a screw d pivoted thereto at e and engaging a nut f, which is grooved to rotate and to slide in a slot g in the frame. The plane iron &c. j is placed on the rest b, which has lateral lugs h connected by a cross-bar i, a plate k is placed on the iron. and a ribbed clamping-member l is placed with its front edge p on the work, with projections thereof n against the lugs h, and with the ribs against the crossbar i, a screw o in the member l serving to clamp the work against the rest b. At the rear of the frame a vertically adjustable leg s is held by screws t giving a coarse adjustment of the grinding angle, the leg having thereon, for use with a grinding-wheel, a roller q which rests on the wheel, or for use with a stationary grinding-stone, a block of wood &c. Gauges.-The device when not in use rests in a stand x, Fig. 2, which has thereon an adjustable abutment y, which serves as a gauge to position the tool edge relatively to the frame.
