Abstract

489,733. Grinding planer knives &c. WALKER-TURNER CO., Inc. Feb. 5, 1937, No. 3479. Convention date, Oct. 12, 1936. [Class 60] A grinding-machine for grinding plane irons &c., and adapted for grinding long planer knives, comprises an electric motor 13 mounted on a pedestal 10 and carrying on its shaft at one end, or at both ends, a cup-shaped grinding- wheel 14. A wheel guard 16 has two lateral arms 17 carrying blocks 19, 20 to which is pivoted, by pins 21, 22, a work table T, the angle of which to the flat face of the wheel 14 is adjusted by means of a protractor 24 engaged by a nut 26 to lock the table in adjusted position. In the table is a guide groove 23 having slidable therein a slide 28, on which is mounted a member 27, adjustably secured by screws 29, and carrying a plunger 30 adjustable axially by a screw 40. The plunger carries a blade clamp 31 comprising a base-plate 32, which rests on the table T and is recessed at 34 to receive a blade 35 ; a clamping plate 36 is pressed on to the blade by screws 37 mounted in the plate 32. In order that a long blade may contact with the wheel 14 at one grinding region only, namely a portion of the flat face near the periphery of the wheel, the table is swivelled about the bolt 43 holding the block 20, so that its edge lies at about 1‹ to the plane of the face of the wheel, by means of a screw 46 engaging a threaded opening in the block 19. The blade, during grinding, is moved across the wheel by sliding the slide 28 in the groove 23 ; for grinding short blades, the table T is set parallel to the face of the wheel. The wheel face is trued by a diamond adjustably carried by a holder secured by one of the screws 37 to the cross-head 32. Cooling fluid is supplied by a pipe 52 from a cup 50 mounted to swing on a post 51 and provided with a cover 54, also pivoted on the post ; fluid is collected in a pan 56. A peripheral grinder 15 with a tool-rest may be mounted at one end of the shaft of the motor 13.
