Abstract
552,326. Turning. VALE,.E. W. Dec. 1, 1941, No. 15437. [Class 83 (iii)] In an apparatus for setting tools at the correct centre height in lathes, horizontal boring machines &c. a member b rotatably mounted between lathe centres or in a chuck is provided with a pivoted arm a fitted with a spirit level h and having a surface g, Fig. 3, in a plane containing the lathe axis and against which a tool j may be adjusted to the same height as the centres. The level h may be calibrated to indicate variations from the centre-height when the surface g is against the tool j. The bar a may be about four inches in length and may be turned to the Fig. 1 position when the device is not in use. In some cases the device may be fitted with a protective strip of celluloid or the like held up by a spring plunger q. The plunger q, Fig. 6, may also serve to secure a template strip t for setting screwcutting tools to notches v, the template being located so that one edge lies against the bar b. If a tail centre is not available one of the end cylindrical parts x may be gripped in a chuck. Also one of the projections x may be fitted with an extension piece to adapt the device to lathes having greater minimum centre distance.
