Abstract

1,080,502. Grinding twist drills. W. R. ANDREWS. June 24, 1966 [June 24, 1965; March 28, 1966], Nos. 26784/65 and 13652/66. Heading B3D. A drill grinding attachment is characterized by the use of a drill 5 to be ground as a gauge to set the distance from the face of a grinding wheel 1a to the axis about which the drill, set at an angle to the grinding wheel, is oscillated during grinding of its cutting face. The attachment consists of a base 1 formed with a slot 1c along which a stop 2 is adjustably clamped by a bolt 4 with one face 2a in the plane of the grinding wheel. A body member 6 is also adjustably clamped by a bolt 7 in the slot and is positioned by abutment against the drill 5 when abutting a surface 2b on the stop to adjust the position of an axis about which a member 9 is oscillatable on the body member. The upper end of the member 9 is formed with a V-groove (9b, Fig. 3) for supporting the drill during grinding, the ends of the arms of the groove being formed with housings (9c, 9d) for rods (10, 11, Fig. 2), one of which supports an arm (13a) which is movable to rest on the other rod and is formed with a V-groove for assisting in supporting a long drill. The rod (11) also supports a clamp (15) having a screw 16 by means of which the drill is fed towards the grinding wheel. The drill is rotatably positioned in the groove (9b) by a finger (12a) which engages one of the lips of the drill and is formed on a member (12) adjustably clamped on a slide 9e.
