Abstract

1,172,046. Copy grinding turning tools. K. HERTEL. 15 Jan., 1968 [17 Jan., 1967], No. 2181/68. Heading B3D. A copying machine for grinding a turning tool 23 comprises a grinding wheel 3, an adjustable arm 8 rigidly connecting a ball joint 10 and a bearing plane 11 which lie in a common plane, a swivel arm 16 mounted on the ball joint, a template 19 having the nose angle 22 of the tool to be ground and mounted on the swivel arm for engagement with the bearing plane, means for clamping the tool to be ground to the swivel arm, a slideway 7 to allow pivotal movement of the adjusting arm 8 about an axis 26 extending parallel to the grinding plane and perpendicular to the line of alignment 12 between the centres of the bearing plane and ball joint, and a slideway 1 for adjusting the spacing between the grinding plane and the centre of the line of alignment. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the machine is set for grinding a tool without a nose radius, the pointed tip of the tool being in line with the centre of the line of alignment 12 as indicated by the tip of an indicator (36) which is retracted before grinding is commenced. The tool is pushed beyond the tip of the indicator a distance corresponding to the amount to be ground off and then clamped. For adjusting the clearance angle, the adjusting arm 8 is displaced on the slideway 7 which is calibrated at 45. Grinding is effected by manually swivelling the arm 16 and pressing the tool against the grinding wheel until the template 19 bears against the bearing plane 11. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the machine is set for grinding a tool with a nose radius, the tip of the tool being set beyond the line of alignment 12 by an amount equal to the desired radius plus the amount to be ground off; the nose radius is set by displacing the assembly relative to the grinding wheel on the slideway 1 which is calibrated at 43.
